At the beginning of the lesson the teacher explained to the group what they were going to be doing for outdoor ed and showed them a video of the rules for the trampoline centre. All of the pupils showed an interest in exploring the various obstacle courses. After the session we asked the pupils for their feedback on what game they were playing as a class and what they thought of the trampoline centre. One of the pupils said "who was the winner of tag" when another talked about how they were feeling "I am so sweaty, like look at me my head is dripping". The overall view of the activity was the pupils positive reactions of the experience saying "it was really fun but I kept slipping over it was so bouncy" and "I really liked the slide because I could go down it really fast that I felt like I was flying". Walking back to the minibus the pupils inquired if they could go back for another outdoor ed lesson.
This blog highlights the wealth of activities the children at Riversides School experience during their weekly Outdoor Education lessons. The range of opportunities coupled with the diverse settings we visit enable the children to explore and engage in learning in a wide variety of ways. This also allows for cross curricular links to ICT, English, Science and Maths.

Year 9 kayaking at Bartley Sailing Centre
At the start the pupils gathered together and was introduced to the instructor for their kayaking lesson. The instructor explained what the pupils were going to be doing and what clothing they would need to wear to keep themselves safe if they fell into the lake. Then the pupils got themselves all kitted up with a wet suit and life jacket. All of the pupils walked down to the kayak boards and watched as the instructor demonstrated how to hold the paddle correctly and how to position their boards into the water. The instructor asked the pupils to gather at the lake as they continued to show how the pupils would need to position their body and feet on the board.
After all of the pupils picked up their boards and began to step into the lake. The pupils positioned their knees on the board first to help keep them balanced as well as using their left and right arms to move the paddle one side of the kayak to the other. As they went further out in the water some of the pupils had a go at standing on the board independently while they continued to move the paddle side to side to help turn themselves around when they wanted to go different directions.
The pupils starting goal for the lesson was to kayak to the number 8 ball which was placed in the lake not far away from the shore. When the pupils began to become more confident they adventured off as a group to the edge of the lake. As they started to make their way back to shore the pupils had kayak competitions to see who could knock their peer off the board and into the water first and who could travel back to the shore the quickest.

speedboating with Year 10/11
The teacher went through the lesson plan of travelling on two different speedboats, one where there is lever and steering wheel when the other one is for the pupils to steer the boat in various directions using the lever to control the engine at the back of the boat. The pupils each had a go at steering the engine boat following the directions supported by the teacher as they went along the lake either left or right, up and down or creating a circular motion in the waves. After we went inside to have lunch as the teacher explained to the pupils that they were going to go out in the second speedboat. When we got down to shore the teacher asked what skills the pupils could remember from last lesson with how to steer the boat. The pupils acknowledged the skills of having one hand on the steering wheel and the other on the lever at all times to explore the movements of neutral, forward and reverse. They took it in turns to showcase those skills.

climbing walls at Red Point with Year 8
The pupils showed an interest at going to Red Point to climb rock walls.
When we got to Red Point all of the pupils got given appropriate footwear and were each harnessed up. The instructor went through the safety rules of how to climb the walls and how to get down. As we got to the first walls the instructor allocated the pupils with what jobs they were going to take on for example, one pupil would climb, another will hold the rope tied to their peer near the lever to help release them when they have decided they have climbing to where they felt comfortable and the third pupil will stand behind to hold the end of the rope as they pull symmetrically with the pupil who is holding the lever to support their peer up when they were climbing. The pupils each had a go at participating in the various roles. After the instructor guided the pupils over to the bouldering area. The instructor explained to the pupils what the bouldering area contained of for example; different height and sized rock walls as well as a variety of angled either vertical or horizontal.
The instructor gave the pupils a challenge of putting themselves into pairs, climbing as high as they could and placing a toothbrush into a hole for their peer to try and reach to retrieve it. To finish off the lesson the pupils enjoyed climbing the variety of walls as they participated in a competition to see who could climb the highest.
Year 9 speedboating along Bartley lake
The pupils enjoyed having a go at seeing how fast they could travel in the speedboat along the lake. The pupils showed an interest in creating the circular motions of a doughnut around the different coloured balls. After the teacher set all of the pupils a challenge of making the figure of 8 between the space of two balls which were close to one another. The teacher went first to demonstrate how the figure of 8 looks. After three of the pupils had a go at steering the wheel and moving the lever up and down to the various letters which associated to either neutral, reverse or forward on the speedboat as they began to create the shape of the figure of 8 in the waves individually or with teacher support.
The other pupils stood on shore and shouted words of encouragement to their peers along with staff members such as one pupil said "wow they are going really fast" when another described an event that nearly occurred saying "oh my god I thought they were going to fall in, the boat nearly tipped". To finish off the lesson some of the pupils showed an interest in jumping into the lake.
Year 7B climbing at Creation
The pupils gathered in a group as the teacher explained what the aim of the lesson was such as; for each of the pupils to give it a go at climbing and to take it in turns with their peers, and what the safety rules were for climbing the rock walls as well as how to land on the soft flooring correctly for example: when you start to loss your balance and fall, you just land on your bottom, this was followed up by an demonstration. All of the pupils enjoyed having a go at climbing to the top or as far as they felt comfortable as they also communicated with encouragement to one another to achieve the goal of climbing the different shaped and sized walls.
